From the Pastor: June 16, 2009

We have had the birthday of the Church, Pentecost, and we’ve also celebrated our United Methodist heritage. May 24th is the date of John Wesley’s heart-warming experience as he reluctantly attended a Bible study on Aldersgate Street.

The church is of God and is instrumental in gracing the life of so many. This summer I would like us to celebrate "I Love My Church Summer." Now, I’m not sure what this will look like. My challenge to you is to think of things we can do to celebrate who we are - like a hamburger lunch after church (Yum!), an ice cream dinner, a pancake supper, more neighborhood visits,..............

I have invited our new District Superintendent, Rev. Tom Halliburton, to preach on July 26th. Some of you have heard him and know that we are in for a treat. Tom and Gayle are also residents of the Village.

Also, Rev. Jodi McCullah, campus minister at the Austin Peay State University Wesley Center, will return one Sunday. I always hear positive comments from her sermons.

I want to issue three challenges to make this summer a great one:
In July and August, please make every effort to be present in worship as we lift our prayers and praise to God. I know that vacations interfere, but be here all you can. It’ll bless a lot of people.
Invite one person a month to come to church. You know those we haven’t seen in a while. You know neighbors and friends and family who do not have a church home. Work hard on getting one person to come each of these two months.
Hang on! I’m also challenging you to give an extra 1% to the church in July and August. If you give 5% each month, try 6% these two months.
Your first step might be to figure out what you give. 2%? 5%? 10%? I know this one is scary but pray about it.
And so, there it is, a summer of celebrating the church. Pray. Make your plans. Develop other ideas.

I am at Annual Conference this week at Brentwood UMC. This is my 34th Annual Conference. Our out-going District Superintendent, Ron Lowery, has indicated that my appointment will be to return to Old Hickory UMC for our 10th year together.

Linda and I are pleased to serve God with you for another year. May God’s rich blessings and loving grace guide, empower, and bless us as we serve as the Body of Christ in Old Hickory Village and beyond. We pray your continued love and prayers.

May God’s Blessings Be!
